Supreme Court Justice and perfect human Ruth Bader Ginsburg sat down for a very long interview with Elle that I will devour like a starving shipwreck survivor at an Old Country Buffet as soon as I get my hands on a copy of the October issue. Among her revelations to the magazine: she's not going anywhere, she and Antonin Scalia are still the world's most ideologically incongruent pair of bff's, and the reason the court is swinging to the right is that one of her colleagues keeps getting more and more conservative.
RBG doesn't blame the folks that are typically subjected to mainstream wonk ire after conservative rulings are handed down. She's not casting shade at Scalia, Clarence Thomas (the Grover Dill to Scalia's Scott Farkus), Chief Justice Roberts, or Alito. She's mad at the centrist. When asked why the court keeps swinging right, she said,
To be frank, it's one person who made the difference: Justice [Anthony] Kennedy. He was a member of the triumvirate used to [reaffirm] Roe v. Wade in the Casey case, but since then, his decisions have been on upholding restrictions on access to abortion.
In other words: What happened to you, Kennedy? You used to be cool.
Please, for your own benefit and for the benefit of a printed women's magazine publishing stuff like this, read the entire interview. And until then, imagine how thoroughly shamed you'd feel if Ruth Bader Ginsburg called you out personally in an interview. That has to sting.
