On the cover of his new album No My Name Is Jefferey, Young Thug (Jeffery) donned what Julianne Escobedo Shepherd rightly called “a sort of origami creation;” a magnificent periwinkle gown in which he resembled a cross between a geisha and something you might hope to find garnishing a cocktail.
The internet’s reaction to the Alessandro Trincone-designed dress was immediate and expansive, and in an interview with Billboard, the rapper submitted the following exquisite explanation for selecting it:
“When I seen that dress, I felt like God gave it to me,” he said.
I know that feeling; it is the best feeling. Young Thug is a veteran when it comes to gender-bendy outfits, and in the same interview, he offered this:
“When I was 12, my feet were so small I wore my sisters’ glitter shoes. My dad would whoop me: ‘You’re not going to school now, you’ll embarrass us!’ But I never gave a f— what people think.”
Not giving a fuck is its own reward, but in Jefferey’s case, his sense of artistry and individual style also landed him in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for the second time.
The artist also plans to wear a gown to his wedding to swimsuit designer Jerrika Karlae, telling Billboard that “there will be two brides.” Without a doubt, they’ll both look stunning.
