In the early hours of Monday morning, a van plowed into pedestrians leaving the Finsbury Park mosque in North London. There have been several casualties, and the police have made one arrest.
According to the Associated Press, those struck were worshippers departing after prayers. Officers arrived at the scene at 12:20 a.m., local time. In the meantime, Great Britain’s terrorist alert has been intensified to “severe,” signaling that an attack is likely to occur.
The driver, a male, attempted escape but, the Guardian reports via eyewitnesses, he was caught.
Says Boubou Sougou to the Guardian, “It was not an accident, I saw everything. People were badly injured. The van driver tried to escape, but people grabbed him. He did not say anything.”
Mosque attendees were observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In the aftermath, people at the site of the attack are posting footage. At least 10 people have been injured.
In the last several weeks, England has been beset by a series of attacks—first a bombing in Manchester, and soon after a vehicular attack at London Bridge, culminating in eight people being run down or stabbed to death by the perpetrators. Many more were wounded.
