Welcome to Titanic Tuesday. It is what it sounds like—a day to talk about the 1997 Academy Award-winning film Titanic.
Some of us are having extremely shitty weeks, and some of us just think about impending doom constantly, but all of us are wondering: if you could curate your own personal iceberg of destruction, what would the band (or DJ, let’s not be rockist here) be playing?
Here are our selections:
Joanna Rothkopf: “Yakety Sax”
“Because it is the right song to pick.”
Bobby Finger: “My Heart Will Go On”
“It would be very meta and ‘fun.”
Kelly Faircloth: “Pop a Top Again”
“I feel like, if I’m in a situation where I’m dying on the Titanic, my vibe would be like, “Well, fuck.” Which is how I feel every time I listen to Alan Jackson.”
Madeleine Davies: “Kind and Generous”
“Because it’s been real and I love Lilith Fair.”
Julianne Escobedo Shepherd: “So Icey”
“I like literalism in my gallows humor and I want to die feeling like a muthafuckin boss.”
Rich Juzwiak: “Freedom ‘90"
“Because all systems should be smashed by any means necessary—even iceberg.”
Ellie Shechet: “Moves Like Jagger”
“I would want to die to a Maroon 5 song because it would be really satisfying to hear Adam Levine drown in the middle.
Is that too dark?”
Aimée Lutkin: “Casey Kasem Loses It in the Studio”
“His voice is very soothing and it also makes me laugh. I also think any song I heard as I died on a boat would be ruined for me.”
Stassa Edwards: “Down By the Water”
“Something about the imagery of water with Harvey crying, ‘Oh help me Jesus’ seems right for impending death in the cold, unforgiving ocean.”
Jordan Sargent: “Bling Bling”
“If I was going down with the Titanic, I would want to be in a good mood, also I would like to imagine I was sinking not into the deadly freezing waters of the greater Atlantic ocean, but instead a warm pool in heaven bobbing with massive diamonds.”
Hamilton Nolan: “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”
“Good Titanic song.”
Hillary Crosley Coker: “Reset”
“As the chorus says, ‘Everything happens for reasons, good doesn’t come without pain. Start over again.’”
Andy Cush: “Idoteque”
“Women and children first, women and children first...”
Kate Dries: “Mine would be silence because hopefully the band and all of you would be dead.”
Well then! What about you all?
