In Meryl Streep’s new biographical comedy Florence Foster Jenkins, chronicling the career of a bad opera singer but fabulous socialite and her manager-husband St. Clair Bayfield, played by Hugh Grant, she’s terrible—in a good way.
In the trailer, via Vulture, Streep plays a vivacious woman who doesn’t understand that she sounds like a dying animal. The character is based on a real woman—a talented piano player who realized she could “sing a higher F than ever before” while screaming in a cab. Grant’s character takes her all the way to Carnegie Hall, leaving us to wonder whether the crowd will throw tomatoes or applause.
