The folks behind Game of Thrones, gentle romantics that they are, just released this teaser trailer for the show’s sixth season. And boy, oh boy is it a mindfuck.
The scene: the Hall of Faces within the House of Black and White, where Arya has been working as an acolyte (though from what we know from the season five finale, she was blinded for disobedience).
As the camera approaches, we’re able to discern the faces themselves, many of which are familiar.
First, we see characters who have died in previous seasons, among them...
Ned Stark, may the poor dumb soul rest in peace:
Catelyn Stark, who I never fully forgave for her treatment of Jon Snow, but who also went out like a BAMF:
And Joffrey Baratheon, that sniveling cretin:
All of the above makes sense; the Hall of Faces is populated with the washed and skinned faces of the dead. But now what’s this? Jon Snow? JON SNOW IS DEAD?
But just before I began to rend my garments and wail at the sky, I noticed the next face...
Tyrion Lannister. What. The. Fuck.
Finally the camera zooms out, and my brain begins hurling itself against my skull:
No, your eyes are not deceiving you; the gang’s all here — at least many of the major players.
After last season, which left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, I wasn’t sure what else the GoT showrunners could possibly have up their sleeves to disturb, unsettle, and terrify. But this teaser suggests that the darkness of the preceding seasons was Care Bears and Smurfs compared to what’s to come.
The sixth season of Game of Thrones begins on April 24, 2016 on HBO. You can check out some recently released character photos here.
