The Three Best Spice Girls Have Reunited as GEM

Whether the Spice Girls would reunite for their 20th anniversary seemed to hinge primarily on whether Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham) and Sporty Spice (Mel C) would be willing to set aside their jobs (fashion designer, Asia’s Got Talent judge) for the good of the collective and, by extension, us.

The answer was apparently no, because now the three best Spice Girls—Scary, Ginger, Baby—have said fuck it and just reunited without them. Operating under the name GEM—Geri, Emma and Mel B—they have relaunched their website for the occasion and filmed the perky video above inviting us to a party, with the cool enthusiasm of when your favorite aunt sends you an overly simple evite. Also, they’ve been working on new music with their old producer Eliot Kennedy, reports the BBC:

He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “We have been in the studio, with just three of them - Mel B and Geri and Emma - and we had a fantastic couple of days.

“We wrote a brilliant song and the energy was exactly like it was 20 years ago, just as enthusiastic, just as much to say, just as much to celebrate.

“I think they have something to do with way female artists are perceived in the pop charts nowadays, I think they’ve had a massive effect on pop music and pop culture, so it’s a good time to celebrate.”

To Posh Spice’s credit, she’s not trying to distance herself from her bubblegum pop past; she’s sharing support for The Global Goals, which have used “Wannabe” as a way to raise awareness for global gender equality. Take that, everyone from the ‘90s who called the Spice Girls and “girl power” empty feminism!
