I’d never thought about it until I saw the World Chess Championship’s edgy new logo, but “checkmating” does sound like a sex thing. My interpretation of this image is that it represents chess getting laid while simultaneously playing itself.
Why did this happen? World Chess’s website helpfully explains that “the key visual for the 2018 World Chess Championship is controversial and trendy, just like the host city,” which is London. I believe World Chess has followed through on its stated concept. Look, here’s a coffee cup in the same advertising campaign that’s just a bunch of disembodied arms!
Also, according to The Telegraph, some are claiming the logo in fact contains “elements of a Swastika” (lines?), or spells “Zion,” and possibly caused some epileptic episodes.
It also kind of looks like a frog sitting on top of a cartoon banana peel. Which I guess is what sex looks like, according to chess.
