Texas Grandma Is Surrogate for Daughter, Gives Birth to Own Granddaughter

A 54-year-old woman in Plano, Texas gave birth to her own granddaughter by acting as the surrogate for her daughter. After several infertility treatments resulted in multiple miscarriages for 28-year-old Kelley McKissack, her mother, Tracey Thompson, offered to be her surrogate — even though she went through menopause several years prior.

After the treatments, McKissack and her husband had four fertilized embryos left, the Associated Press reports. They were implanted in Thompson last April. Thompson had to receive medical treatments in order to prepare her body for the pregnancy. “Tracey was already seven years past menopause but in otherwise excellent health,” the Medical Center of Plano told WFAA-TV, Channel 8.

“It’s been many years since I was pregnant,” Thompson said. “The second trimester was great! The first and third were really tough.” Thompson delivered a 6 pound, 11 ounce baby girl. The baby was named Kelcey, a combination of Kelley and Tracey. “Her and her husband had gone through so much — the miscarriages and fertility,” Thompson told WFAA-TV. “I didn’t want to disappoint her.”
