Sony has closed a deal with the Jim Henson Company to produce a reboot of Labyrinth, the 1986 fantasy film which starred a teenaged Jennifer Connelly trying to rescue her baby brother from a goblin king, played by David Bowie. The news evokes feelings of “Too soon” and questions of “Why, even?” Seriously, why?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the script will be penned by Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman. There are no details yet on whether the movie will be a new take on the original film or a sequel. Rumors of the latter have scared us before.
After Bowie’s death on January 10, Connelly recalled her time on the Labyrinth set. “It was like wonderland for me,” she told ET Online. “I loved Jim Henson, and David Bowie was so sweet to me. [Making] it was probably more fun than watching the film. It was a really special experience.”
During its initial release, Labyrinth had bombed at the box office and only became a cult hit in later years. If there is going to be a brand-new Goblin King, who could even fill Bowie’s bulge-enhancing leggings? I certainly am not ready to embrace a CGI version of the ‘Ello worm.
