It looks like Shonda Rhimes will definitely have a fifth show on ABC. Yesterday, ABC confirmed that it had ordered a pilot of Still-Star Crossed, a sort of sequel to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The show is based on Melinda Taub’s 2013 novel of the same name.
The novel takes place after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet and focuses on the still-feuding Capulets and Montagues. According to Still-Star Crossed’s synopsis, the families decide that the only way to end the bloody feud is by marriage. The families pick two unwilling, but probably very good looking, teens. Sounds about perfect for the melodrama-infused style that’s the hallmark of Shondaland.
The series has been in the works for awhile. Rhimes will bring on her Shondaland team, including Betsy Beers and Heather Mitchell. Variety notes:
For Shondaland, the foray into young romance marks somewhat of a new genre, following the more mature relationships in current hits “Grey’s,” “Scandal,” “How To Get Away with Murder” and former medical drama “Private Practice.”
Mitchell will serve as both writer and producer and Rhimes will be a non-writing producer. Rhimes’ fourth show for the network, The Catch, a midseason replacement for Scandal, is set to debut on January 26, and she’s also working on a couple other projects, because the woman does not sleep.
