Current Today Show A-Team Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer stayed up past their bedtimes to appear on television’s best talk show, Watch What Happens Live!, Thursday night and spend time with host/genius Andy Cohen. While no tea is spilled (Lauer and Guthrie are careful not to disparage anyone, and with good reason), it’s a charming set of videos to enjoy on a Friday afternoon.
During a game of Dish In the Dark, the duo gave vague admissions about not liking certain guests and the existence of a Today blacklist. Later, a caller asks Lauer about whether or not he regrets his 2006 interview with Britney Spears. (“This is so Watch What Happens Live!,” Cohen interrupts during a fit of disbelief. “Matt is getting a question about an interview with Britney Spears.”)
And, finally, there’s a pretty amusing Clubhouse Playhouse segment during which Lauer is asked to wear a Tom Cruise wig and recreate his famous 2005 interview with the actor. “Can I just say before we do this, I like Tom Cruise and we have a good relationship and good friendship.” (Sure, Matt.)
While I understand “charming” and “pretty amusing” aren’t exactly the highest praise, sometimes that’s all you need.
