During a Television Critics Association panel for the new Hulu series 11.22.63., James Franco spoke about his upcoming remake of the Lifetime original movie classic, Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?. The original 1996 film starred Tori Spelling as college student who brings her new boyfriend home to meet her mom, only to realize he’s a psychopath. Franco confirmed Spelling will star in the remake, but will be playing the mother.
According to /FILM, Franco said the idea for the remake came from A Deadly Adoption, the Lifetime movie that Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig starred in last year. “Will told me that he was actually inspired by my going on General Hospital when he did that,” Franco said. “Then Lifetime came to me and said, would I like to recreate one of their movies like Will did. I said yes, as long as I could change it a bit. It has some similar elements of the original but it’s completely revamped.”
Franco also said that he didn’t actually watch A Deadly Adoption, which I find rude. “ It sounded conceptually what he did was amazing and it sort of sounded in line with what I had done on General Hospital,” he said. “When I went on General Hospital, I didn’t want to change anything. I wanted to have the full soap opera makeover. It sounded like Will and Kristen Wiig just wanted to have the Lifetime makeover. They just wanted to be part of the Lifetime world. I had kind of already done that, so when they asked me to do it I said I’ll do it if I can change it.” Sorry James, but the Lifetime world is VERY different than the regular soap opera world. At least it is in my eyes.
The he said this: “You’ll have a very non Lifetime movie on Lifetime.” So Franco is not only going to remake one of the best Lifetime movies (mostly due to its cheesy title and Tori Spelling’s Prince Valiant-style bob), but he’s also going to make it a “non Lifetime movie”? Flames! Flames on the side of my face!
