Kerry Washington has signed an overall deal with ABC Studios, hopefully joining her boss Shonda Rhimes in churning out hit shows for the network.
The news was confirmed today by Variety:
Under the new pact, Washington will be expanding her behind-the-camera work, developing broadcast, cable and digital projects exclusively for ABC Studios and ABC Signature, which specializes in cable and digital content.
The news comes through Washington’s production company, Simpson Street, which produced her recent HBO film, Confirmation. The Anita Hill biopic was Simpson Street’s debut production. (Washington and her Scandal costar Katie Lowes also executive produced a pilot about a group of nannies for Shondaland, but the show was not picked up.)
The announcement follows the network’s promotion of Channing Dungey, who became the first black woman to head ABC entertainment.
In a statement, Washington stressed the importance of “having a seat at the table” and praised ABC’s “commitment to inclusive storytelling.”
