Well, shit. With a mere 90 minutes to spare, Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein submitted an official petition requesting a recount of Wisconsin’s general election results.
Performing the recount in this battleground state costs $1.1 million, and Stein has already fundraised $4 million. But, determined to petition for recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania as well, Stein ultimately hopes to raise $7 million.
“After a divisive and painful presidential race, reported hacks into voter and party databases and individual email accounts are causing many Americans to wonder if our election results are reliable. These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified, Stein said in a Wednesday statement. “We deserve elections we can trust.”
The Wisconsin Election Commission has already reported its receipt of Stein’s petition and, according to Administrator Michael Haas, “is preparing to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for President of the United States.”
Where will this lead? Probably to foolishly high hopes that will shatter bitterly come Inauguration Day. At this point, it’s emotionally dangerous to suppose that anyone besides Donald Trump will become president. But hey, dreams are important! So, you go Jill Stein. You do the damn thing.
