Josh Radnor, who has a very big deck, will always be remembered as Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother, especially because his newest project sounds like something Ted Mosby would produce, then be mercilessly mocked for by the rest of the gang.
Radnor has teamed up with singer-songwriter Ben Lee to create the indie-folk duo Radnor & Lee. Listen to their second single, “Doorstep,” and picture Ted strumming outside of Robin’s window, crooning, “I was a lonely man with an empty hand and I wanted to fill it with treasure.”
According to their press release, Lee and Radnor have been friends for about a decade and promised to write a song together, which led to an entire album. Anyway, their debut song on Soundcloud, “Be Like The Being,” sure as hell sounds like something that would play over a montage at the end of an HIMYM episode where Marshall and Lily look at each other with tears in their eyes, then run into each other’s arms:
But don’t be fooled, the song is actually about spiritual matters, which the friends discuss frequently and at length, probably on Radnor’s huge deck:
“Both of us grew up in middle-class Jewish households, but our interest in spiritual matters has never been relegated to our own tradition. We’re philosophically and theologically curious and much of our music reflects that. We’re as likely to find lyrical inspiration in the words of the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, Rumi, and Herman Hesse as we are in the Torah and the Gospels. We understand “God” is a loaded term for many and we wish there were a better one. On the occasions when we say it and sing it we mean the mysterious, the unknown, the eternal fountain of truth, wisdom, and virtue. A shared interest in spirituality was one of the ways we connected as friends. We’re excited about inviting others into the conversation through song.”
Damn. I need a palate cleanser.
