In the new video for the song, “Kill V. Maim,” from her album Art Angels, Grimes leads a group of subway-inhabiting vampire misfits in a futuristic dystopian city. What exactly inspired Grimes to write the tune? According to Rolling Stone, she described it as being from the perspective of Al Pacino in The Godfather: Part II. ‘‘Except he’s a vampire who can switch gender and travel through space.”
She makes reference to the inspo in the chorus, which she sings in a cheerleader-like chant: “B-E-H-A-V-E aggressive/Tell me I’m a mobster looking so fresh.”
Even in a Versace sweatshirt, Grimes really knows how to embrace the graver within. Chances are, either you or someone you know was once a graver, a.k.a. gothic raver. Maybe, just maybe, someone in the vicinity of this article was a graver years ago. Perhaps this person even wore a black PVC halter with her JNCOs.
Grimes, wearing a wig reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s old ‘N Sync hairdo, borrows Lady Gaga’s vampire nails from American Horror Story: Hotel.
Someone definitely should recreate this sick ride for the next Burning Man.
Finally, she brings us to what I will safely assume is her ideal vampire sanctuary: a blood rave.
In the 1998 movie, Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as a half-human, half vampire, and Stephen Dorff as his blood-sucking mortal enemy, there’s a memorable scene in which vampires are at a nightclub and blood rains from the ceiling. Fun fact: many of the extras suffered from skin infections due to the fake blood being recycled and used over and over again. Hopefully the conditions on the set of Grimes’s vid were much safe safer.
A perfectly morbid ending.
