After announcing her desire to start feminist book club, Emma Watson has finally decided on its name: “Our Shared Shelf.” How quaint. Watson officially launched the club on Goodreads and declared Gloria Steinem’s My Life on the Road as the first book. At the time of publication, the group has over 64,000 members. Other famouses, such as Sophia Bush, Abby Wambach and Kate Voegele have also joined.
On the club’s Goodreads page, Watson writes:
As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.
Watson encourages members to read the chosen book then discuss it in the forum during the last week of each month. She also hopes to have the author or “another prominent voice on the subject” join in on the fun. Steinem herself already piped in with a request.
The only thing this virtual book club is lacking is the wine.
