Though Franco's regime imposed a brutal level of repression on Spanish women, they had previously asserted a remarkably radical and powerful role in the fight against subjugation, both by encroaching fascists and the sexist revolutionaries who sought liberation primarily for men. Anarchist women's organizations like Mujeres Libres—who refused to "separate the women's problem from the social problem" and thus did not identify as feminist—not only issued supplies to the militia but also trained their members to fight.
