North Carolina’s current Governor Pat McCrory has signed a bill that’s nakedly, shamelessly designed to strip power from his incoming Democratic replacement. Governor-elect Roy Cooper has threatened to sue the state GOP over the bill, and several people, including a journalist, were arrested during a protest against it Thursday night.
The bill was proposed during a surprise special session, which many promptly identified as bullshit, and said so. Seventeen people were arrested during protests over it, including Joe Killian, a reporter at NC Policy Watch, who was charged with trespassing and breaking legislative building rules for trying to watch and cover the ongoing arrests.
McCrory signed the bill at 3 p.m. on Friday, and Cooper promptly promised once again to sue:
Anyway, file this event under “good examples of power grabs” for later.
