America Might Be Spared the Horror of the New Great British Bake Off

If this nightmarish trailer for the newest season of the Great British Bake Off scared you into never watching the show again, you might be in luck—PBS hasn’t decided whether or not it will air the latest season in the United States.

A brief update, for those who don’t breathlessly follow this kind of niche drama: Host Paul Hollywood and the beautiful tent full of pastel stand mixers and gingham moved from the BBC to Channel 4; Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc quit. They were replaced by cookbook author Prue Leith, comedian Sandi Toksvig and Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding. That first trailer for the Channel 4 iteration of this modern classic is what you see when you accidentally eat the whole edible instead of the recommended modest nibble.

PBS has aired the past four seasons of the show in America and a few episodes have made their way onto Netflix. Earlier this year, PBS chief programming executive Beth Hoppe said that the show is one of PBS’s most popular, especially in the streaming category. “We’re thrilled to continue airing this warm and charming competition for at least two more seasons, and continuing to build its popularity on these shores,” she said in January. The season finale of the seventh season aired on PBS earlier in August. According to the New York Times, PBS said that they’ll show one of the earlier seasons of the show next—meaning that Paul, Mary, Sue and Mel will still be there—but whatever happens after that is anyone’s guess.
