Archie, the red-headed teen of comic book fame, is getting his own television show. Variety reports that teen melodrama factory CW announced that it has ordered a pilot for the television show Riverdale, a show based on Archie and his famous friends.
Via Variety:
Based on the characters from Archie Comics, but set in present day, the project is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
Okay, that’s an idea — an idea, however, that currently and shockingly overlooks the true hero of Archie Comics, Jughead Jones.
The show will be produced by Greg Berlanti, who practically owns the CW at this point. Berlanti’s other credits include Arrow, The Flash, and the truly terrible Legends of Tomorrow (sorry). If Berlanti’s other shows are any kind of indication, Riverdale will be packed with action, drama, and very good looking people who love CrossFit.
Riverdale appears to be part of a renewed interest in Archie Comics. Last year, Funny or Die’s Adam McKay announced that he was writing a Broadway musical based on the perpetual teens.
