The Weeknd used to have some hair. It reached up from his head like a giant, curling wave just on the precipice of crashing down on his forehead. (Or, as The Cut’s Ashley Weatherford put it, a flaccid penis.) It was distinctive. It was dramatic. Frankly, it ruled. And then, one September day, just like that—gone, without so much as an explanation or a note goodbye.
In many cases, we’re forced to go through life without ever really knowing why a celebrity does or (does not) cut his or her hair. But after more than two months, Abel Tesfaye has finally broken his silence.
“The vision wasn’t there anymore,” he told DJ Zane Lowe from BEATS 1 during an interview:
“It was there and then just like the music, it was getting really sad. It was the greatest feeling of all time [cutting it off]. It was so good. I could sleep better, I felt lighter, and when I perform, I perform better and feel better, it’s cool. The best part about all of it, I get to wear fucking hats again. Wear a fucking cap and walk into a restaurant and nobody knows it’s you, it’s the greatest feeling.”
The hair went where everyone’s hair goes when it’s finally cut: Into a safe, for use on a later date.

Optional Semi-Related True Story: A friend of mine is an artist, and was recently describing to me her latest project, which involved gluing clumps of her hair to a foam board.
“Wait, why do you have clumps of your hair?” I asked, concerned.
“I save it when I get it cut,” she replied.
“In WHAT?” I asked, mystified.
“In a box. I keep it under my bed,” she said.
“So...a hair box.” I said, less a question than a statement.
“I guess,” she said.
“Great,” I said.
The End.
