As entirely expected, though surprisingly early, FX has renewed its two popular new series Atlanta and Better Things for second seasons after just two weeks on air, thanks to great receptions and ratings.
As Deadline notes:
These are rare early renewals for FX, which usually waits for comprehensive DVR and VOD data before making these decisions. But both comedies have been breakouts, with very strong reviews and, particularly in the case of Atlanta, big early ratings.
Atlanta, Donald Glover’s great and funny take on rap and blue-collar life, gave the network its highest premiere ratings since 2011. The premiere earned the best primetime ratings for a basic cable scripted comedy among 18 to 49-year-olds since Inside Amy Schumer (that’s a lot of qualifiers, but you get it; it’s good).
Pamela Adlon’s mom-centric Better Things—also a standout among this year’s TV premieres—was FX’s second best premiere of the year, ratings wise, among female viewers age 18-34 (next to Atlanta). A good day for black people and divorced women. FX would certainly love to take AMC’s place in our basic cable hearts now that Breaking Bad and Mad Men are gone and The Walking Dead is a mess in a bad way.
