How could two such chill people—one who was a founding member of the Pussy Posse, and another who can’t get cast because of her damn good looks—butt heads?
Back in 1999, Maguire and Theron were 22, fine as hell, and figuring out who really made the Cider House Rules on set. US Magazine shared some choice quotes about their vague conflicts from Theron’s upcoming V Magazine interview:
“Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time,” Theron, 40, told V Magazine in its Hollywood Issue cover story. “I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie. Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time.”
Yeah, like maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s that you want to kick your co-star’s throat in, whatever. She says they worked through it, because they’re actors, goddamit:
“The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time. I love Tobey,” she claimed [writer’s note: shade, US Magazine]. “I’m kind of glad we had that experience on that movie. It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else … We had some really intimate moments. Tobey and I didn’t feel that way about each other, so I had to figure something else out.”
Close your eyes and think of England? I’d love to see a list of all the things Tobey Maguire’s co-stars thought about instead of him during all their kissing scenes. Kirsten Dunst had it the easiest, she kissed him upside down with a mask covering most of his face in Spiderman.
It’s hot, because it could be anyone else.
Charlize Theron also talked about what it feels like to age when you have been known for years as a woman of great and terrifying beauty:
“We live in a society where women are treated like wilted flowers,” she continued. “They used to be pretty, but now they’re just kind of wilting. The guy is like a fine bottle of wine. He just gets better and better with age. It became very real, the vanity of it all. That we are all animals of our circumstance. If you are raised to believe that your power is only good for as long as you’re beautiful, then that’s what you’re going to believe.”
While I enjoy making fun of Charlize Theron, and almost all other celebrities, I feel her on this. Maybe the media is directing her to talk about her looks more and more, but it certainly seems to be on her mind lately.
It probably is very hard to figure out who you are when the thing you’ve valued the most about yourself starts to change. I’d probably feel the same way if I ever stopped being able to loudly guess TV plot points before anyone else in the room has figured out what’s coming next.
