In case you were unaware, the male nursery web spider is a kinky little rascal.
But, as the New York Times explains, its preference for bondage is born from necessity: they “tie up females with spider silk before mating to avoid being killed and eaten.”
It follows that these spiders must then make a post-coital dash to safety. If the female nursery web spider was already inclined to eat her lover, one can imagine that impulse only grows stronger after she is thwarted by a swift bedroom trick. As you can see from the National Geographic video posted above, the male spider’s survival is not ensured, even when he follows Christian Grey’s lead.
National Geographic tells us that “at least 30 spider species engage in some form of bondage.” Perhaps we should have taken the Bloodhound Gang more seriously.
