University of North Texas junior Sara Mutschlechner, 20, was fatally shot early on New Year’s Day in a road rage shooting. She had offered to serve as a designated driver for her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters as they celebrated New Year’s Eve.
According to the New York Daily News, the shooting occurred after passengers in Mutschlechner’s car spoke to a group of men who pulled up beside them in a black SUV:
“The SUV was carrying five or six men — and words were exchanged between the people in the SUV and passengers in Mutschlechner’s car, police said. Someone in the SUV fired, and Mutschlechner was struck by a bullet before crashing her car.
The San Marcos, Tex. resident was on life support for most of the day Friday before dying, authorities said. One of her friends also sustained minor injuries.”
Mutschlechner and her friends had attended a New Year’s Eve party that evening, and police suspect that at least some of the passengers in the SUV had been there as well. However, the Daily News reports that “no suspects have been identified or arrested” thus far.
Zeta Tau Alpha chapter president Jordan Roberts issued the following statement: “Each and every one of our lives at the Gamma Phi Chapter of ZTA has been touched by the spunky, selfless attitude of of our beloved sister, Sara. She is by far one of the most spirited, honest and fun-loving people I ever had the privilege to know. She will truly be missed.”
