The Weather Channel has released the list of 2015-2016 winter storm names and, while some blizzies are stuck with classic titles like “Hera” and “Olympia,” others are getting a modern twist. Batten the hatches, everyone: winter storm Yolo is on its way.
The Weather Channel began naming winter storms in 2012 to make reporting easier.
“It’s simply easier to communicate about a complex storm if it has a name, which our naming program has demonstrated,” says Weather Channel senior hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross. “Good communications benefits everyone.”
All of this year’s storm names were chosen by the Bozeman High School Latin class in Bozeman, Montana (and tweaked by Norcross), which is probably why a handful of them sound like they were brainstormed based on things you find in Claire’s Accessories stores, which, I believe, legally require all their employees to change their names to Kayla.
