In the upcoming February issue of Elle UK, the Fifty Shades of Grey star mentioned a trip he made to a sex dungeon to research the role of Christian Grey.
Once you peel back the "OMG Jamie Dornan went to a sex dungeon" layer, however, his statements seem a little...off, especially to those in the BDSM community (h/t International Business Times). Here are Dornan's offending quotes:
"I went there, they offered me a beer, and they did…whatever they were into."
And:
"I was like: 'Come on guys I know I'm not paying for this but I am expecting a show.' It was an interesting evening. Then going back to my wife and newborn baby afterwards... I had a long shower before touching either of them."
IBTimes reached out to Rumpus founder and BDSM practitioner Stephen Elliott, who expressed offense at Dornan's characterization of his community:
"To me it's the equivalent of making a movie about gay people and making homophobic remarks," Elliott told International Business Times of Dornan's comments. "For some people, BDSM is an orientation. 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is based on people who exist. To make a movie based on those people and then call their desires disgusting, I feel like anyone with kinky desires should boycott this film."
When Fifty Shades of Grey came out in 2012, BDSM advocates like Emily Pryor, director of the L.A.-based Center for Positive Sexuality, aired concerns that the book "perpetuates the ongoing idea that people who do this are broken in some way." (In fact, a recent study suggests the opposite.) Judging by this recent bout of public insensitivity, the movie is gearing up to send the exact same message. Hollywood: Where hindsight is 20/200.
